This site teaches all of the vowel sounds. Recommendation: Adult beginning learners can use this site on their own for review or with a tutor for practice.

The Learning Edge
The Learning Edge is a newspaper for adult learners. This site has stories and activities with sound and video. It also has tests on subjects like math and reading. Subjects include health, safety, work, newspaper ads, household bills, and more. Learners can hear articles read to them and read along with the text.

The Northern Edge is a newspaper for adult learners. This site has activities with sound and video. It also has tests on subjects like math and language. Learners can hear the articles read to them and they can read along following the text.

Reading Skills for Today's Adult
This site provides practice in reading, guided oral reading, fluency (reading smoohtly), and comprehension skills. The activities on this site help adults become better readers and more informed consumers, parents, employees, citizens and community members. The focus of these reading selections is on topics such as: Civics, Employment, Housing, Health, School, Money, and Government. The reading includes two different levels. Level 1 is easier and level 2 is much harder. Each level is divided further into grade level reading, such as 3.5, 5, 8, and so on. If you are not sure of what level to try ask your tutor or teacher, or try a level, and then if it is too easy or too hard you can choose a different level. The cool part about this site is that it reads the text outloud to you so you can follow along and practice reading, too! TIP: Beginning readers choose level 1. Intermediate readers choose level 2.

Adult Learning Activities<
This site has articles about working, family, government, school, health, housing, money, science, technology, services, going places, and nature. All articles have text, audio and learning activities. Activities include Learn New Words, Spell a Word, Matching Game, Pick an Answer, Write an Answer. Some of the stories have video. Each story has a Basic Story and a Full Story.

Skillwise
Skillwise has a lot of different activities, worksheets, games, and fact sheets on math, writing, spelling, vocabulary, reading, grammar, and writing.

Favorite Poem Project
This site has short videos of people reading their favorite poem. Each person also talks a little bit about their life. Each poem is also in print. Site includes classroom lessons and projects.
Recommendation: Adult learners of all levels can use this site. Beginning learners may need tutor support. Do not miss the videos. They are a collection of all ages of people from throughout the United States who share a brief life story and read their favorite poem.

Learning Resources
This site has news stories that learners can choose to read in two levels, full and abridged. The story also has activities such as vocabulary, word selection, multiple choice, putting things in order, conclusions, and your opinion.

Reading Exercises - English Works!
This site has stories about famous people such as Thomas Edisonthat learners can choose to read. Each story also has comprehension and vocabulary questions to answer online.


Higher Level Reading
Journal of Ordinary Thought
The Journal of Ordinary Thought publishes stories written by Chicago residents. They sponsor writing workshops across Chicago, free and open to all adult residents. Their motto is, Every Person Is a Philosopher.

Reading Comprehension Connection
This site includes activities such as reading for understanding, reading strategies, and vocabulary. Reading for understanding (intermediate level) gives a sentence and then a word in context from the sentence. Learners must pick the correct meaning of the word. In the advanced level, a short paragraph is shown instead of a sentence. Reading strategies uses the same format. Vocabulary in Context gives a sentence in which the words can be correct or incorrect. Learners must choose the incorrect word given in the sentence, if there is one, or choose no error.

Awesome Stories is a free, interactive web site with stories about some of the world's most interesting people, places and events. Topics include history, flicks, famous trials, disasters, religion, inspiration, biography, and law.
This site uses a larger font that is easier to read. There is a lot of white space on a page. Advanced learners can use this site on their own with teacher support for follow-up.

The Key is a newspaper written for new readers and adults with limited reading skills. All material in The Key and on-line is free of copyright for nonprofit, education purposes only. The Key New Readers Newspaper has been published monthly since 1988.
Advanced adult learners can use this site on their own. Intermediate adult learners can use this site on their own if teacher support is available.
