Working with Students

After the adult learner has been assessed, staff contacts a potential tutor to determine tutor's availablity, geographic location, and interest in working with a particular adult learner. Staff shares with the tutor the adult learner assessment results, goals, and personal interests. When tutors are initially matched, a staff person reserves the meeting site and attends the first meeting. Staff attends the initial meeting to introduce the tutor and the adult learner, and to provide instructional materials including a Get Acquainted Packet.

Four to six weeks after the initial meeting a staff person contacts the tutor to determine any further needs the tutor or the adult learner might have. We encourage all our tutors to sign up for e-mail. A staff person is available by phone or in person to provide additional resources for the tutor as needed.

Materials

The Adult Learning and Technology Center contains a number of resources for tutors. These include a variety of student materials at various levels of instruction, high-low readers, educational games, newspapers, workbooks, tutor resource manuals and books, and computers and software, including access to the Internet.

Ongoing Training Opportunities

The program tries to periodically offer workshops for tutors to enhance teaching skills as well as to provide motivation and inspiration.
