To became a certified volunteer tutor you must:

•Have a high school diploma or its equivalent

•Have strong basic skills in reading, writing, and math

•Possess a sincere desire to help another adult improve basic skills

•Attend a volunteer tutor orientation

•Complete a series of pre-service training workshops in either teaching reading or learning to speak English

Training is usually held at the College of Lake County in Grayslake and at the Adult Learning and Technology Center in Waukegan. The training is provided by the Lake County Adult Learning Connection staff and a team of consultants who work in the field of adult literacy and education.
